Fed: Gov t. contradictory on petrol Cook

CANBERRA, Feb 23 AAP - The Federal Government was sending contradictory messages over
petrol, proving it still did not understand the issue, the Labor Party said today.

Treasurer Peter Costello had today ruled out changes on fuel excise while Prime Minister
John Howard had left the door open to change, Opposition trade spokesman Peter Cook said.

He said Mr Howard was attempting to show concern about the impact of high fuel prices
but could not bring himself to make changes to help motorists.
