Vic MP Theophanous quits after demand by =3 Melbourne

Mr Theophanous refused to spell out his personal support
for Mr Brumby's leadership or to criticise Mr Brumby, saying
he hoped his absence would lead to a revitalised Labor Party
and a win at the next state election.

"He is the current leader of the Labor Party and he needs
to be supported by people within the Labor Party," he said.

"I support the leader of the Labor Party and a focused,
unified party going together in a unified way ... to an
election.

"If my action leads to a revitalised Labor Party winning
the next election I will be a very happy man."

He denied he had destabilised Mr Brumby's leadership.

He said his main point of difference with the leader had
been over trade unions and the need for the unions and
political party to work together.

He said he intended to keep working on policies
particularly about workers compensation.
