NSW: 81-year-old woman dies in crash

An 81-year-old Portland woman has died and two others are fighting for their livesafter a head-on crash in western NSW.

A New South Wales police spokesman says two women and a man were trapped in the twovehicles involved in the incident at Lithgow.

The dead woman was travelling as a front seat passenger in a white Hyundai Excel whenthe accident occurred at 1.40pm (AEDT) yesterday.

The Hyundai - driven by a 42-year-old woman from Lithgow - collided head-on with ablue Ford Telstar driven by a 43-year-old man from Greystanes.

The police spokesman says the Telstar was travelling southbound on the Castlereagh Highway.

Both drivers were trapped for several hours before being released and flown by Careflightto Nepean Hospital where their condition has been described as critical.
