SCI:Urban trees crucial for wildlife: study

CANBERRA, Feb 3 AAP - Large trees in urban areas provide a crucial role for wildlife,
a new study has found.

Researchers at the Australian National University say trees in cities provide habitat
that is vital in sustaining biodiversity and bird life.

The team say it is the first time a study of this type has been done anywhere in the world.

Karen Stagoll, a PhD candidate at the university's Fenner School of Environment and
Society, said large trees were considered "keystone structures", providing resources such
