WA: 70 year old prisoner back in custody

A 70-year-old man has been returned to jail after walking out of a minimum-security
prison south of Perth earlier today - just three days short of a four-year sentence.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman says it's not certain whether the elderly inmate's
disappearance from Karnet prison farm was an escape attempt or a medical issue.

Prisons officers told the ministry the man had been in a disoriented state about 2am
(WST) and, although officers had calmed him down, he had vanished about 4.30am.

A police helicopter spotted the man at 1.15pm after a bushland search by police and
State Emergency Service workers.

He was found 3km from the prison after wandering for hours through bush in more than
39 degree heat.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman says the man appears to be well but will undergo medical
tests to assess his health.

He's serving a four-year term, but the nature of his conviction isn't immediately known.
