NSW: University rally continues in northeastern NSW

University students will rally in northeastern New South Wales today after a national
day of protests during which at least two campuses descended into violence.

National Union of Students president JODIE JANSEN says students and staff at the University
of New England will stage a demonstration to coincide with a meeting of the university's
council.

The action follows rallies yesterday by thousands of students nationwide -- including
an estimated 400 from UNE -- angered by federal government plans to increase fees.

A quarter of Australia's 38 universities have signalled they'll increase course fees
by the 25 per cent allowed under legislation passed last December.

Ms JANSEN says fee increases of up to 20 per cent are being considered by UNE.

Police clashed with students in Sydney and Melbourne yesterday.
